Catholic Tattoo

Whenever anything disagreeable or displeasing
happens to you,
remember Christ crucified and be silent.

--St. John of the Cross

I have no desire to get a tattoo. But this might be one that would tempt me. I'm sure it's way too long to appear in any way attractive or reasonable. Perhaps there is a way to emblazon it on my mind and heart.

I don't objectively disagree with tattooing the body to show devotion to the Lord. Still, it might be better simply to "tattoo" the heart with an abiding and fervent love of God and let our words and actions be our outward sign of that devotion.

I do frequently encounter quotes or prayers that I wish I could permanently affix to my person in order to never forget (though I would eventually forget even a tattoo once the novelty and pain wore off). I've chosen this particular quote for the New Year, not to stamp on my bicep, but to write down with my morning prayers. I'll see it at least once a day and perhaps by next January, it will be a permanent fixture on my heart and mind.
