Beautiful Advent

It's a distracted Advent. A showerless Advent. A little bit of a messy Advent. However... the harried loose ends that plague my mothering cannot hide what is Beautiful and Joyful about Advent. He is coming. And He will come whether my hair is brushed or not. Whether the dishes are done or not. Whether the kids bicker or not. Whether I have managed to pull of a Jesse Tree this year or not.

Here are a few lovely things happening around my home (but not my own photos because my camera is AWOL)...

What is simmering on the stove...

A Handmade Parade
Mine is not so pretty (and I'm missing the cranberries) but still smells so wonderful. I cut up an orange and some lemon, threw in some ground cinnamon and cloves, added water, and that was that. It simmered all evening until I started cooking this...

Cooking Light
And then those lovely smells took over. This is not my chicken. But it looks remarkably like my chicken (except for the sprig of rosemary).

I made these yesterday with a little person... or rather we made something that looks a little bit similar to these since I tried not to help too much...

The Woodside Kitchen
Today, I said yes to a birthday request...

Gooey Cookies and Cream Double Chocolate Cake Bars

And placed a birthday order for someone who loves to make beautiful things...

Pro Art "Art on the Go"

And finished up the day watching little girls color snowmen blue and red, watching Little Cub joyfully hack his snowman to bits with his "own" scissors, and waiting for the big kids to come home from a cold, cold game of football and an evening of apologetics.

Full disclosure: I picked out the beautiful pieces from a very messy day. That is what mommy bloggers do best and it helps keep our blessings squarely before our eyes. I will confess to you that I stopped reading a couple of my favorite blogs this season because I felt so inadequate in light of their Advent genius. But then a good friend reminded me that we all have our sufferings, our weaknesses, our ugly. I stopped fuzzing up my eyes when their feeds rolled in and squarely faced the beauty in their lives... and gave thanks to God.
